Dance & Musical Theatre
The Rockhampton Grammar School Dance and Musical Theatre Academy (DMTA), provides boys and girls aged from 3 years, a unique opportunity to combine academic and dancing pursuits. Girls and boys can integrate their academic studies at The Rockhampton Grammar School with their dance, vocal and speech & drama instruction, at a level of detail that is not available anywhere else in Central Queensland.
The Academy is open to the whole community and accepts students who do not attend RGS as well as students who do attend the school.
The Academy’s goal is for Central Queensland children to develop expertise in several genres of dance, including musical theatre. The programs on offer enable students to go beyond the technical side of dance and give students a wider, deeper understanding of movement and performance. This includes a seamless link for secondary students to undertake courses such as Certificate III and Certificate IV in Dance, being offered at The Rockhampton Grammar School through the Australian Dance Institute (ADi) in 2016.
The Academy offers excellence in personal tuition tailored for the individual and fosters a disciplined, positive and supportive environment, allowing students to excel at the same time as experiencing the love and enjoyment of performing. Students enjoy programs that promote healthy living, confidence, self-esteem, important thinking skills as well as gaining a sense of coordination, rhythm, musicality, style and a chance to make life-long friendships with the other members of the Academy. These important life skills help promote the whole individual living up to the School’s motto, Macte Virtute et Litteris (Grow in Character and Scholarship).
Featuring fully qualified, experienced and talented staff, the Academy offers a range of classes in the various facets of dance, vocal and speech & drama.
Members of the Academy share a strong sense of family and belonging, with staff, parents and students sharing the same goal of providing a wonderful, positive environment for the students to explore and refine their artistic skills.
The Academy has four professional studios including one large rehearsal venue and three specialised dance studios featuring fully sprung Harlequin Cascade Dance Floors, frameless wall mirrors and professional dance barres and sound systems all in air-conditioned comfort. All studios are located in the Islay Lee Learning Centre and the students have access to warm-up areas and a study room used for students to complete homework or study whilst waiting for classes. This study room is also used for tutorials for the Certificate III and Certificate IV Dance courses.
