RGS wins rugby union titles
The Rockhampton Grammar School 1st XV rugby union team produced its 10th consecutive Rockhampton District Secondary Schoolboys Open Rugby Union championship title at Rugby Park on Monday evening.
RGS had to work hard for the win against Emerald’s Marist College in wet conditions.
Scores were locked at 22-all at full time before Ben Condon’s try made the difference for RGS to record a 27-22 victory.
It was a strong hit out for both teams as they now prepare to tackle schools from south-east Queensland in the annual Ballymore Cup, held in Brisbane during the first week of the school holidays.
RGS also won the Under-15 title with a come-from-behind 17-12 victory against Emmaus College.
Emmaus was leading 12-10 late in the game before Lamech Gilmartin scored the winning try and earlier try scorer Bronson Ryan made the conversion.
RGS coach Jonathan Burr said it was a fitting grand final in difficult conditions.
“These two teams look set for some close and exciting fixtures over the next few years,’’ Burr said.
“It was rewarding to see this group of boys finally get some success and now they are enthusiastic to keep it going in Brisbane.’’
The RGS Under-15s will travel to Brisbane next week to compete in the Ballymore Cup, played from 5-9 April.
RGS Under-15s won the championship last year. Marist are the defending Open division champions with RGS not fielding an open team last year due to a schedule clash with their biennial New Zealand Rugby Tour.
