Introduction
To quote our Mission Statement, "the School aims to provide a disciplined, personalised and stimulating learning environment which will foster academic, sporting, moral and social development".
In the Middle School we recognise that young adolescents need to experience a curriculum written specifically for them. Curriculum that will improve student attitudes to learning, motivate their active involvement in learning, improve their perceptions of themselves as learners, and foster confidence in solving problems and making decisions.
How these areas are to be addressed:
Academic. By providing:
- a core curriculum relevant to young adolescents but which also meets the requirements of senior schooling
- a variety of elective subjects and opportunities to modify course direction
- opportunities for independent and self-paced learning
- activities and tasks which offer opportunities for success for all students
- opportunities for sustained personal endeavour, in-depth learning and the pursuit of excellence
- regular, systematic and detailed monitoring, assessment and recording of student learning
- information on study and career options
And by
- recognising and catering for the diversity of student abilities, needs, interests and learning styles
- communicating useful information about student progress
- focusing on a student centred rather than content centred approach to teaching and learning
Sporting. By
- providing a wide range of well-organised activities
- encouraging student participation
- recognising student achievement
- catering for all ability levels
Moral and Social. By
- understanding the developmental needs of young adolescents
- modelling fairness, kindness, tolerance, consistency and decency
- emphasising personal development, self-esteem, self-management skills, social skills and communication skills
- providing students with opportunities to develop an awareness of, and a value of, social responsibilities and cultural differences
- providing students with opportunities for making informed decisions and reaching their own conclusions
