The Primary Signing Choir was initiated in 2001 by Michael Robertson, to provide the primary students with the experience to perform in a signing choir, learning skills in Signed English, musicality, dance and performance. The choir has enjoyed much success and remains a highlight of many Grammar and public functions. Michael Robertson brings years of performance experience to the choir, being a fully qualified dance teacher and seasoned performer.
The choir boasts 30-40 students from Years 5-7 and rehearses each week. The children have performed to large, receptive crowds at the Rockhampton Mayor's Morning Tea, Pilbeam Theatre events, Rockhampton Eisteddfod and Gala Concerts, RFDS fundraising events, The Rotary Centenery Festival and the Rockhampton Grammar School Primary Speech Nights, Music Festivals and Arts Festivals.
As part of their performances, the children learn how to sign as a team, add movement and expression to their performance, focus on getting the meaning and mood of the song across to the audience, and use props and simple costumes to add a professional, performance touch to their work.
Costs
Sometimes students will incur a small cost for the subsidizing of props and simple costumes.
Uniforms
Day school uniform with ties for boys, is worn for all performances. School uniforms are worn for rehearsals.
Performances
Children perform at the Rockhampton Eisteddfod in May of each year and at other special events throughout the year, including the RGS Music Festival in October and Primary School Speech night in the last week of Term 4.
