Ballroom Dancing was initiated in 2005 by Miranda Broadbent, to give students across the secondary school the opportunity to learn this important social skill. Students are invited on a term-by-term basis to enjoy dancing lessons at Manderson's Dance Centre. Professional dance tutors, Justyn and Amanda Manderson open their dance studio for The Rockhampton Grammar School's use for an hour lesson per week. This allows our students the opportunity for a safe, comfortable and natural environment in which to dance. The MIC for this activity, Miranda Broadbent, has danced with Manderson's Dance Centre for 8 years, completing many medals and competing in several competitions during this time, thus allowing her to also be part of leading the lessons at the studio.
Students who join Ballroom Dancing are given the opportunity to request particular dances they would like to learn and so far we've seen students learn Cha Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Jive, Waltz, Foxtrot, Progressive Jive, Evening Three Step, Gypsy Tap, Mambo and Merengue.
Many students are simply interested in learning to dance, but some join for specific reasons such as preparing for their Debutante Ball or for the Formal. Each year there has been a large group of year 12 students who have thoroughly enjoyed dancing up a storm at the Formal after doing one or more terms of Ballroom Dancing throughout the year.
Students are not expected to enter any competitions and do not require any special equipment for this activity. Mostly the students have fun and learn that no one really has two feet. The other important lesson that students learn is that Ballroom Dancing really does live up to its other name "Dancesport", especially after a couple of minutes of doing the jive!
Lesson times
Lessons are held every Tuesday afternoon 4:30 - 5:30. A bus is provided for boarder students and departs from the front of the School between 4:00 and 4:15.
Costs
The cost of each term of dancing depends on the length of the term and the number of students who participate. The total cost for the whole term is charged to each student's sundries account.
Uniform
Students are able to wear neat, casual clothing that is comfortable and appropriate for dancing. Shoes should be comfortable, preferably without a rubber sole.
