Ritamada

In 1971, Robert Mackay Brown bequeathed to The Rockhampton Grammar School the 82 hectare beach property RITAMADA, located 4 kilometres north of Emu Park.

In early 2001, the Board of Trustees with the Headmaster, Mr Islay Lee, conducted a study of Ritamada covering its use and unique location. This study resulted in a development plan which was implemented in 2001.

The property now boasts a classroom, large amenities block, boatshed, high ropes course, a large multi-purpose hall and a self-contained cabin. The cabin offers accommodation for teaching staff and visiting lecturers.

Marine Teaching Centre

Ritamada supports both the School's marine studies programme and the maritime vocational training offered under the School's unique Curriculum Plus programme in co-operation with the Australian Maritime University. Coxswain courses are conducted and are available to the general public as well as RGS students.

Pastoral Care Facility

As part of their pastoral care programme, all students spend time camping at Ritamada. As an outdoor Education Centre, it provides new experiences and challenges for all. The high ropes course and maritime activities, such as sailing and canoeing, provide opportunities for students to develop self-confidence and the concept of teamwork.

The majority of the site will be left in a pristine state and a revegetation programme will reintroduce the original flora of the area. This will provide Science and Biological Science students with a real life laboratory in which to conduct field studies.

Ritamada provides a unique environment where students can be both challenged and encounter experiences that enhance learning.
