School History
In 1881, 64 students (33 boys and 31 girls) began their education in a schoolhouse built on the range overlooking the town of Rockhampton. The Rockhampton Grammar School was co-educational for four years before becoming a boys-only institution in 1885. Not until 1977 - after a 92 year absence - were girls readmitted in response to the changing needs of a society which recognises the benefits of a natural, balanced education. Families can now send all their children to one school where they have access to the same facilities and opportunities.
The other significant change in the School's history was the reintroduction of a Primary Department in 1990. Seventy-six students from Years 1 to 7 were enrolled that year and, over the successive years, community support has grown for a continuous education from Year 1 to Year 12. The Primary Department now caters for more than 300 students.
Since its foundation in 1881, thousands of young men and, more recently, young women have passed through The Rockhampton Grammar School. Through Australia's Federation and both world wars, the School has produced outstanding leaders in the fields of commerce, agriculture, sport, military and the law. Many have gone on to tertiary studies; others have opted to join the workforce; but all have been well prepared to handle their chosen path.
